Question: Why would anybody want to live in barrow alaska?

The average salary there is lower than the rest of the united states as a whole. The cost of living is > > the rest of the united states, PLUS For a good period of time (around a month) there is no sunlight and over that time the temperature is bellow 0 degrees. It can get to below 50 degrees F. In addition to that, the unemployment rate is 12.7 % there while the national average is 5.8 %. Why do so many people live there (even if you don't include the eskimos =/ )

Not many people live there. The population is only 4,000. And 64% of them are native. So there are only about 1,400 people there who aren't native. Otherwise it is the borough seat of the North Slope Borough which is home to the oil refineries along the Arctic coast. And I don't know where you got your figures but the national unemployment rate is closer to 10%.
