No, but you need a passport to get back into the USA - this is an American rule. I should imagine that Canadian Customs would be reluctant to let you in without a passport, as you could not get out of Canada again. However, you can get the green government passport, for free, can't you? For official travel? Have fun with the heat in Georgia! I live in Yukon (close to Fairbanks, Alaska) so I know what it is like up here. What a change for you!

Yes you need a valid US passport.

You should check with your unit administrators. Long, long ago when I was stationed in West Germany it was possible to enter other countries with military ID and travel orders listing the countries authorized to visit. Maybe that still works, and maybe it works for passing through Canada. Or maybe the new rules no longer permit that.

If you are flying directly from Alaska to anywhere in the lower 48, you do not need a passport. If you are deplaning in Vancouver, or elsewhere in Canada, you do need a passport. If you are driving, then you definitely need either a passport or an enhanced driver's license (the one with the computer chip in it)

It's possible that as you're travelling on military order you may be exempt from the US regulation requiring a passport to re-enter the country. (I don't know) Check with your unit orderly room who should be able to provide you with the required info. I would think that if you need a passport the army will pay for it.
