On your way east be sure to check out the canyon country of southern Utah. Do the "Great Circle Tour " to see Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, and Arches National Parks. Bryce is one of the most fantastic sights in the southwestern U.S. nps.gov/ brca/ nps.gov/ zion/ index.htm At Bryce Canyon everyone stays at Ruby's Inn. rubysinn.com/ Utah Route 12 is one of the most scenic roads in the country. Red Canyon and Big Thunder Road in Dixie National Forest is the inspiration for Disneyland's Big Thunder Mountain (see the picture I took in link below) en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/ File:RedRockUtah.jpg utah.com/ byways/ highway_12.htm scenicbyway12.com/ From California, stop for the night and get a cheap room in Las Vegas (Imperial Palace mid week $35). Visit the Hoover Dam and take the tour. It's right outside Las Vegas. usbr.gov/ lc/ hooverdam/ service/ DamTour.html Get an early morning (dawn) start from Las Vegas, head north on I-15 to St. George, UT and turn off there for Zion and Bryce. You'll be at Zion by 11 AM and spend a couple of hours touring the canyons of the park. Then head to Bryce. You can make Ruby's Inn by sundown. If you time it right you can see sundown on the Hoodos (very impressive) desertusa.com/ mag03/ feb/ hoodo.html Spend the next day or half day in Bryce and head east. You can then take the Route 12 Scenic Byway and head east toward Arches National Park. From there you can head to Colorado. nps.gov/ ARCH/ index.htm I really want to stress the beauty of Bryce and the Route 12 Scenic Byway. It's one of the most impressive drives I've ever been on. BTW if you plan to go to more than one National Park, buy the annual pass. It allows a vehicle and it's occupants unlimited access to all National Parks for a year. nps.gov/ fees_passes.htm Avoid what's left of Route 66. It's not what you think.

Check these sites:roadsideamerica.com/ Unusual stuff nps.gov/ index.htm National Parks I gather you;re going to try following old Route 66. When we went from Petaluma CA to Fayetteville NC we crossed it and followed it several times.

Your most scenic route is definitely not what's left of rt 66. Your more scenic route would take you from SoCal to Needles CA >Oatman AZ >Peach Springs AZ >Seligman AZ >GCN Stop mapquest.com/ maps?1qn= SAN &2c= Needles &2s= CA &2y= US &2l= 34.848099 &2g= -114.613297 &2v= CITY#b/ maps/ m:map:4:34.138727:-115.178904::::::1:1:::::::::/ l:San+ Diego+ International+ Airport+ (SAN):3225+ N+ Harbor+ Dr:San+ Diego:CA:92101:US:32.73071:-117.1958:address::1:::14710409/ l:::Needles:CA::US:34.848099:-114.613297:city::1:::/ l:::Oatman:AZ::US:35.026402:-114.382797:city:Mohave+ County:1:::/ l:::Kingman:AZ::US:35.1894:-114.0522:city:Mohave+ County:1:::/ l:::Peach+ Springs:AZ::US:35.529202:-113.424698:city:Mohave+ County:1:::/ l:::Seligman:AZ::US:35.3256:-112.876701:city:Yavapai+ County:1:::/ l:Grand+ Canyon+ National+ Park+ Airport+ (GCN):Highway+ 64:Grand+ Canyon:AZ:86023:US:35.95723:-112.13194:address::1:::/ io:1:::::f:en_US:M:/ bl:/ e Then GCN >Kayenta AZ > Mexican Hat UT >Cortez CO >Durango CO >Montrose CO Stop mapquest.com/ maps?1qn= GCN &2c= Kayenta &2s= AZ &2y= US &2l= 36.727798 &2g= -110.253899 &2v= CITY#b/ maps/ m:map:5:36.607581:-110.009002::::::1:1:::::::::/ l:Grand+ Canyon+ National+ Park+ Airport+ (GCN):Highway+ 64:Grand+ Canyon:AZ:86023:US:35.95723:-112.13194:address::1:::10519780/ l:::Kayenta:AZ::US:36.727798:-110.253899:city::1:::/ l:::Mexican+ Hat:UT::US:37.151901:-109.866402:city:San+ Juan+ County:1:::/ l:::Cortez:CO::US:37.3489:-108.585297:city:Montezuma+ County:1:::/ l:::Durango:CO::US:37.275299:-107.879402:city:La+ Plata+ County:1:::/ l:::Montrose:CO::US:38.478298:-107.875603:city:Montrose+ County:1:::/ io:1:::::f:en_US:M:/ bl:/ e Then Montrose CO >Poncha Springs CO > Vail CO >Granby CO >Georgetown CO >Estes Park CO >Cheyenne WY Stop mapquest.com/ maps?1c= Montrose &1s= CO &1y= US &1l= 38.478298 &1g= -107.875603 &1v= CITY &2c= Poncha+ Springs &2s= CO &2y= US &2l= 38.512798 &2g= -106.076698 &2v= CITY#b/ maps/ m:map:5:39.415785:-106.703713::::::1:1:::::::::/ l:::Montrose:CO::US:38.478298:-107.875603:city::1:::/ l:::Poncha+ Springs:CO::US:38.512798:-106.076698:city::1:::/ l:::Vail:CO::US:39.640301:-106.373596:city:Eagle+ County:1:::/ l:::Georgetown:CO::US:39.7061:-105.696899:city:Clear+ Creek+ County:1:::/ l:::Granby:CO::US:40.086102:-105.938904:city:Grand+ County:1:::/ l:::Estes+ Park:CO::US:40.377201:-105.521103:city:Larimer+ County:1:::/ l:::Cheyenne:WY::US:41.139999:-104.819702:city:Laramie+ County:1:::/ io:1:::::f:en_US:M:/ bl:/ e At this point you just go Cheyenne to chicago direcadmittedlyly it's a long drive in one day But I've done it several times or if you're an american history buff you could head up to Scottsbluff NE and then head toward Chicago mapquest.com/ maps?1c= Cheyenne &1s= WY &1y= US &1l= 41.139999 &1g= -104.819702 &1v= CITY &2c= Torrington &2s= WY &2y= US &2l= 42.064999 &2g= -104.181099 &2v= CITY#b/ maps/ m:map:6:41.602616:-104.254391::::::1:1:::::::::/ l:::Cheyenne:WY::US:41.139999:-104.819702:city::1:::/ l:::Torrington:WY::US:42.064999:-104.181099:city::1:::/ l:::Scottsbluff:NE::US:41.866699:-103.666702:city:Scotts+ Bluff+ County:1:::/ l:Chicago+ O'Hare+ International+ Airport+ (ORD):10000+ Bessie+ Coleman+ Dr:Chicago:IL:60666-5037:US:41.98059:-87.90559:address::1:::/ io:1:::::f:en_US:M:/ bl:/ e Safe trip

1) So Cal to Grand Canyon via whatever way you take from your house... 2) Grand Canyon to White Sands National Monument in New Mexico...(when you watch the link it is sand not snow); Take I-40 East to I-25 South to US-70 East... vimeo.com/ 5282766 3) White Sands National Monument to Dallas. You should check out Dealey Plaza and try some Texas Brisket. 4) From Dallas head up to Cahokia Mounds outside of St. Louis in Illinois. cahokiamounds.org/ 5) From Cahokia Mounds drive no more than two hours east to Shawnee National Forest. 6) Head straight up to Chicago from the Shawnee National Forest.
