What are some great points of interest in the south (georgia, florida)?

Question: What are some great points of interest in the south (georgia, florida)?

(Posted by: Ryan on 2010-02-06 09:13:19)

My folks are going to make a trip pretty soon from Michigan to Florida. I am looking for any good information (books, websites, podcasts, or ideas) on points of interest for them to check out on the way. I know that they want to stop in Savannah, Georgia. They might stop at some national forests\parks. Any ideas on noteworthy stops in Savannah or anything on the way from Michigan to Florida will be appreciated.

First off, disregard the other person who just posted that there is nothing to see down here. I've traveled the world (literally), and am still intrigued by many places in the South. You need to visit Beaufort, SC when you are in the Savannah area. It's near the GA-SC border. In fact, it's only about 30 minutes from downtown Savannah if you are on US-17. Beaufort is a city many movie makers use when their films are set in the South. For example, many scenes from Forest Gump, The Big Chill and The Prince of Tides were filmed here. It's a great place to spend a few hours exploring! In Savannah itself, I would just recommend walking around the historic district. Be sure to explore the historic squares and, of course, Forsyth Park. I despise organized tours, but a tour of Savannah would be appropriate as a first-time visitor. An organized tour will fill you in on the history and show you the primary sites. Finally, I recommend my town, St. Augustine, Florida. The town has become "touristy, " but still has quite a bit of good history. You need to take a tour of Flagler College to see the insanely ornate Ponce de Leon Hall. It is truly spectacular!
